SPRING THEATRE PRODUCTION, TWO WORKSHOPS PLANNED AT
ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY
CANTON- The Fat Free Chicana and the Snow Camp Queen, a play by Elaine Romero,
will be produced at St. Lawrence University on March 30 through April 2, 2005,
at 8 p.m. each evening, in Gulick Theatre.
Admission is free but tickets are required and may be picked up at the box office
in the Gulick lobby 1-5 p.m. March 28-April 1st or after 7:30 p.m. on performance
nights.
Romero’s play is the story is of a young Chicana, Amy Duran, who is trying
to juggle two conflicting sets of influences and expectations: the pull of her
Mexican heritage and her own desire to assimilate into the culture of the United
States. Her struggle with the challenges and necessary compromises of negotiating
this “borderland” existence are brought to vivid life through Romero’s
delightful comedy. The play also includes strong elements of magic realism in
the person of a rather eccentric and dual-natured godmother who keeps creating
new complications for Amy.
The playwright’s works have been produced and presented at such theatres
as Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Women's Project and Productions, INTAR,
Kitchen Dog Theatre, the Working Theatre, and the New Theatre. She has been
published by Vintage Books, Samuel French, and Smith & Kraus (Women Playwrights:
The Best Plays of 2000).
Romero will visit campus in conjunction with the production of her play, participating
in the free, public following events:
