ALUMNI AUTHORS PART OF ST. LAWRENCE WRITERS SERIES
CANTON - Two writers who are graduates of St. Lawrence University return to campus to
speak and read from their work as part of the St. Lawrence Writers Series, and as part
of the University's celebration of its sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary.
Tom Chiarella '83 and Dennis McNally '71 are scheduled to speak on Thursday,
February 9, at 8 p.m. in the Common Room of Sykes Residence Hall. The event is open to
the public, free of charge.
Chiarella is the author of Foley's Luck, a collection of linked stories;
Writing Dialogue, a textbook; and Thursday's Game: Notes from a Golfer with Far to Go.
He has received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and the 1997 Story of the
Year Award from Short Story Journal. A writer-at-large for Esquire magazine, Chiarella
teaches at DePauw University.
McNally is the author of A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead,
the first biography of the group sanctioned by the band, and Desolate Angel:
Jack Kerouac, the Beat Generation, and America, an adaptation of his doctoral
dissertation in American history at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
He has been a freelance journalist and was an archivist for legendary rock promoter
Bill Graham. The publicist for the Grateful Dead for over 20 years, McNally continues
to work as a biographer and publicist for Grateful Dead Productions.
