ZEN MASTER TO GIVE TALK AT SLU ABOUT 'HEALING BREATH'

CANTON - "The Healing Breath," a meditation session and discussion
with Zen master Roko Ni-Osho Sherry Chayat, will be held at St. Lawrence
University on Tuesday, March 30, at 7 p.m. in Herring-Cole, as part
of this year's Festival of the Arts on campus, which focuses on the
Tibetan Buddhist view of health and healing.
The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Last year, Chayat became the first American woman to receive
the honor and title of "roshi" in the Rinzai Zen tradition in a ceremony
held at the Zen Center in Syracuse. She is the art critic for the
Syracuse Newspapers and began Zen practice in 1967. Chayat received
lay ordination in 1985 and full ordination in 1991; she also has been
the spiritual director and abbot of Syracuse's Zen Center since 1980.
She frequently lectures on both Zen and art throughout the country.
Speaking about how the practice of meditation can assist in
healing, Chayat states, "The simple technique of meditation can help us
transform the way we meet life's challenges. In this healing breath
workshop, we will learn how to cultivate mindfulness and the direct experience
of the present moment, which can have profound and life-transforming effects."
In conjunction with the St. Lawrence Festival of the Arts, the
North Country Zen Center will sponsor meditation sessions on Wednesday,
March 24, at 6:45 p.m. in Herring-Cole and on Wednesday, April 14, at
6:45 p.m. in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery.
For more information, contact Festival directors Catherine Tedford,
315-229-5174, or Catherine Shrady, 315-229-5264.
