CANTON - St. Lawrence University was chartered by the state of New York on April 3, 1856,
and to celebrate the 150th anniversary of that event, celebrations are being held on

On Monday, April 3, at 11:30 a.m., St. Lawrence students who have conducted research
projects on aspects of University history will give presentations in Gunnison Memorial
Chapel. Steven Peraza, of New York City, will give a presentation on Jeffrey
Campbell '33, St. Lawrence's first African-American graduate; Katherine Gay, of Malone,
will present "A North Country Perspective: The Intersection of Universalism and Education
in Canton, New York"; and students in a research seminar called "1856," examining
political, economic, social and cultural forces in the year of the University's
founding, will discuss aspects of their research.
The presentations will be followed by a Sesquicentennial music program by the
Laurentian Singers.
Gatherings organized by University graduates are being planned for Charter Day in a
variety of locations across the country, including Albany, NY; Alexandria, VA;
Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Baltimore, MD; Boston, MA; Boulder, CO; Bozeman, MT;

2005 semester and continues through the academic year, finishing up at Reunion,
