CANTON – In order to better provide resources to programs and facilities directly
supporting its academic mission, St. Lawrence University will accept proposals for
the purchase and use of two properties in the Adirondack region: Catamount Lodge and
the Snow Bowl.
Both properties are located along Route 56, south of the University campus.
"While these are wonderful places that have served the St. Lawrence community
in a variety of ways, Catamount and the Snow Bowl are properties that are not directly
related to the academic mission of St. Lawrence," Vice President for Finance Kathryn
L. Mullaney said. "We hope to sell these properties in order to use the financial
resources associated with them on projects and programs more central to our core
mission."
Catamount Lodge, which is situated on 397 acres in the Town of Colton within
the Adirondack Park, has been used as a year-round conference center for small
groups. It has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a dining room and living room each
with fireplaces, and a full kitchen. The land includes access to Catamount Mountain,
a hiking destination; snowmobile trails that connect to established trails to
Tupper Lake, Lake Placid and Cranberry Lake; and two miles of Raquette River
shoreline.
The Snow Bowl is 394.5 acres with a mile of frontage on both sides of
Route 56. Located in the Town of Colton outside the Adirondack Park, the Snow Bowl
was used as an alpine and Nordic recreational skiing site, operated for many years
by the University. Cold Brook flows along the road the full length of the property.
Proposals for the purchase of either property should include the offering price,
as well as a description of the intended use. Regarding Catamount, the successful
proposal will be one that balances the economic benefits with a use that minimizes
the environmental impact on the property. St. Lawrence University will request a
sustainable-use deed restriction consistent with Adirondack Park Agency land-use
guidelines that seek to "protect and preserve the natural resources of the lands
within the park while permitting human use and enjoyment of those lands." More
information is available at this Web site: www.stlawu.edu/dining/catamount.html.
Proposals should be directed to Mullaney, St. Lawrence University,
23 Romoda Drive, Canton, NY 13617. Review of proposals will begin June 15, 2004.
