EDUCATION REMAINS TOP JOB CHOICE FOR SLU GRADS
CANTON – For the second year in a row, education is the top career field
choice for St. Lawrence University graduates one year after graduation,
according to a recent survey conducted of the Class of 2002.
Education was also the top choice in last year's survey; it has been
in the top five fields for the past four years. It is also the top choice
for those in graduate school.
The follow-up study on the Class of 2002 has been completed by the
office of career services and leadership education, with a reporting rate
of over 72 percent. Of those reporting, 74.3 percent are employed and 19.7
percent are attending graduate or professional school, for a combined total
placement rate of 94 percent.
Of those responding, just over 25 percent reported working in education,
making it the top choice. Other fields in the top 10 were, in descending order:
banking/finance/investments; sales/marketing; other (fields not named here);
legal/law-related; recreation/athletics; publishing/writing; science/technology;
human/social services; and health/medicine.
The survey also shows that most graduates – 43 percent – got their jobs
through "networking," seeking a job through personal contacts, internships or
St. Lawrence's alumni and parent network. Last year, the number-one method of
getting a job was direct application, which fell to the number two spot this
year, at just over 37 percent.
Director of Career Services and Leadership Education Carol L. Garbarino
noted that the survey shows a 4.3 increase in full-time employment one year out
of college, "in spite of what was perhaps one of the most challenging job
markets in a decade."
