EDUCATION IS TOP JOB CHOICE FOR SLU'S 2001 GRADS

CANTON - Education is the top career field choice for the St. Lawrence
University Class of 2001, according to a recent survey undertaken
to find out what graduates are doing one year after Commencement.
	Education replaces sales/marketing, which was in first place
in last year's survey; last year, education was in second place.
Those fields, along with banking/finance/investment, have been in the
top four fields for the past five years.
	The follow-up study on the Class of 2001 has been completed by
the office of career services and leadership education, with a reporting
rate of over 67 percent. Of those reporting, over 72 percent are
employed and over 22 percent are attending graduate or professional
school, for a combined total placement rate of over 94 percent.
	Of those responding, some 24 percent reported working in education,
making it the top choice. Other fields in the top 10 were, in
descending order: sales/marketing; banking/finance/investments;
government/non-profit organizations; human/social services;
recreation/athletics; science and technology; environmental;
hospitality/tourism; and health/medicine.
	Education is the top choice for those in graduate school,
at nearly 7 percent.
	The survey also shows that most graduates got their jobs by
directly applying for them, and that a significant percentage (over
36 percent) got them through "networking," seeking a job through
personal contacts or St. Lawrence's alumni and parent network.
