SALES & MARKETING TOP FIELD FOR RECENT SLU GRADS

CANTON - Sales and marketing are the top career field choices for
the St. Lawrence University Class of 2000, according to a recent
survey undertaken to find out what graduates are doing one year
after Commencement.
	Sales and marketing tied for first place in last year's
survey, and has been in the top five choices for the past five years.
	A follow-up study on the Class of 2000 has been completed by
the career planning office on campus, with a reporting rate of over 76
percent. Of those reporting, nearly 80 percent are employed and over
15 percent are attending graduate or professional school, for a combined
total placement rate of over 95 percent.
	Of those responding, over 14 percent reported working in
sales/marketing, making it the top choice. Other fields in the top
10 were, in descending order: education; banking/finance/investments;
government and non-profit organizations; science and technology;
health/medicine; human and social services; legal/law-related;
recreation/athletics; and environmental or hospitality/tourism
(last two tied).
	Education is the top choice for those in graduate school, at
4.7 percent.
	The survey also shows that most graduates got their jobs by
directly applying for them, and that a significant percentage (over
13 percent) got them through "networking," seeking a job through
personal contacts or St. Lawrence's alumni and parent network.
