SALES, FINANCE TOP CAREER FIELDS FOR '99 SLU GRADS

CANTON - Sales/marketing and banking/finance/investments were
the top career field choices for the St. Lawrence University
Class of 1999, according to a recent survey undertaken to find
out what graduates are doing one year after commencement.
For the previous two years, education was the top field.
That dropped to the number-three choice this year.
A follow-up study on the Class of 1999 has been completed
by the career planning office on campus, with a reporting rate of
over 86 percent. Of those reporting, over 77 percent are employed
and some 16 percent are attending graduate or professional school,
for a combined total placement rate of 93 percent.
Of those responding, 14 percent reported working in both
sales/marketing and banking/finance/investments, making those the
top choices. Other fields in the top 10 were, in descending order:
        - Education; government and non-profit organizations;
science and technology; advertising and public relations; arts
and entertainment; environmental; and human/social services,
health/medicine and legal/law-related.
Education is the top choice for those in graduate school,
at just over 3 percent.
The survey also shows that most graduates got their jobs by
directly applying for them, and that a significant percentage (nearly
17 percent) got them through "networking," or seeking a job through
personal contacts or St. Lawrence's alumni and parent network.
