EDUCATION TOP CAREER FIELD FOR SLU GRADS

CANTON - For the second straight year, a survey of St. Lawrence
University graduates one year out of college shows education to
be the top career field.
	A follow-up study on the Class of 1998 has been completed
by the career planning office on campus, with a reporting rate of
84 percent. Of those reporting, some 72 percent are employed and
21 percent are attending graduate or professional school, for a
combined total placement rate of 93 percent.
	Of those responding, 18 percent reported working in the field
of education, making it the top choice. Other fields in the top 10
were, in descending order:
	Sales and marketing, 16 percent; Banking/finance/investments,
15 percent; Government and non-profit organizations, 7.5 percent;
Science and technology, 7 percent; Human and social services, 6 percent;
Advertising and public relations - recreation/athletics (tied), 5
percent; Insurance, 4 percent; Environmental - arts and entertainment
(tied), 3.5 percent.
	Education is also the top choice for those in graduate school,
at over 5 percent.
	The survey also shows that "networking," or seeking a job through
personal contacts or St. Lawrence's alumni and parent network, accounts
for a big percentage of how graduates found jobs; over 27 percent indicated
that this was how they obtained employment.
