'ZOO PORTRAITS' IN EXHIBITION AT SLU'S BRUSH GALLERY

CANTON – "Captive Beauty: Zoo Portraits by Frank Noelker" will be on exhibition
in St. Lawrence University's Richard F. Brush Art Gallery September 30 through
October 30. A slide lecture by the artist will be given on Wednesday, October
20, at 7 p.m. in Room 123 of Griffiths Arts Center; it is open to the public,
free of charge.
In the foreword to the 2004 University of Illinois Press publication
Captive Beauty: Zoo Portraits by Frank Noelker, famed zoologist Jane Goodall
states, "Noelker's work makes a powerful statement. It is both beautiful and
profoundly disturbing. He has captured, in this series of portraits, the very
essence of the problem of zoos."
The photographs in the exhibition are not merely shots of animals in
zoo settings; the images convey an ambivalence. Their sad, stark beauty
confronts viewers, challenging them to consider the nature, purpose and
effects of zoos.
Noelker is an associate professor of art at the University of Connecticut.
His photographs of animals in zoos have been widely exhibited, both in solo
and group exhibits, and are included in the permanent collections of a number
of museums. He has published a limited-edition portfolio, Animals.
