Candlelight Service Returns to Gunnison Memorial Chapel
St. Lawrence University’s traditional Candlelight Service will return to Gunnison Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, Dec. 9.
Celebrating its 94th year, the service will feature the Laurentian Singers, University Chorus and a community children’s chorus from Canton Central Schools conducted by Sondra Goldsmith Proctor, St. Lawrence's musician-in-residence. The children, fifth and sixth graders, have been working together since early October with their teacher, Kimberly Busch.
There will be two services, one at 7 p.m. and one at 9 p.m., each 55-minutes in duration. Both services are free and open to the public. The 9 p.m. service will be streamed live by North Country Public Radio and can be viewed online at www.stlawu.edu/2015-candlelight-service.
For more than 90 years, the Candlelight Service has been a milestone of the St. Lawrence experience and the holiday season. The service offers a pause for reflection before final exams. It marks the end of the fall semester and the approaching turn of the calendar year. The service also signals the beginning of winter and the promise of longer daylight.
The service had been performed for the last two years in Leithead Fieldhouse, following an October 2013 fire that damaged the chapel.
