SLU TO HOLD SYMPOSIUM ON LOCAL ISSUES

CANTON - The first annual Ellen C. Burt Symposium will be
held May 6 and 7 at St. Lawrence University, on the topic
"Going Local: Capitalizing on our Resources in St. Lawrence
County." The event will be held in the Eben Holden
Conference Center on campus.
	The Burt Symposium brings together stakeholders in
northern New York to explore ways to enhance the region's
economic, environmental and educational vitality. It is
funded by the University's Ellen C. Burt '42 Endowment for
North Country Education, and speakers at this year's event
include University President Daniel F. Sullivan, St. Lawrence
County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karen St.
Hilaire and attorney Michael Shuman, author of Going Local:
Creating Self-Reliant Communities in a Global Age.
	The symposium will include a panel discussion on
forecasts and economic development planning; case studies of
community-based economic development; and the establishment
of action/research teams in areas such as energy; food and
agriculture; retail; finance, real estate and insurance;
housing; health; entertainment and tourism; transportation;
education; and business enterprise and production. The teams
will work on plans in those topic areas for a year, reporting
on them at next year's symposium.
	The Ellen Cuthbert Burt '42 Endowment for North Country
Education was established in 2002 by members of Burt's family,
to address the needs of education in the North Country, as
well as economic and environmental concerns.
	Registration is $10 per person, and is open to all
those interested in the topics to be addressed. To register,
or for more information, contact Coordinator Susan Kramer, at
(315) 229-5664 or (315) 229-7423.
