CHAIR IN STATISTICS ESTABLISHED AT SLU WITH $1.5 MILLION GIFT

CANTON -- John Burry Jr., a 1953 graduate of St. Lawrence University,
has, with his wife, Sylvia, made a gift of $1.5 million to St. Lawrence
University to establish the Jack and Sylvia Burry Chair in Statistics.
Professor of Mathematics Robin H. Lock has been appointed to
the new position.
The Burrys, of Bonita Springs, Florida, and Scottsdale, Arizona,
have made the gift to recognize "the critical importance of teaching and
learning in statistics as a part of a liberal education," as well as allow
the University to expand the size of its faculty and encourage
student-faculty collaboration in the classroom and through independent
research.
"Sylvia and I very much support the University's efforts to
increase the amount of teaching and learning in science and mathematics
that happens in situations where faculty serve as coaches or mentors and
students as apprentices," Jack Burry said. "We support this effort because
we believe that learning is deeper and more meaningful when it happens in
that way."
Lock, a graduate of SUNY Oneonta with a master's degree and Ph.D.
from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, has been a faculty member
at St. Lawrence since 1983. He specializes in statistics research, has
taught statistics courses and has published a number of articles and papers
on the teaching of statistics.
"This generous gift from the Burrys will allow the University to
further several goals," said University President Daniel F. Sullivan. "In
addition to increasing the size of the faculty and encouraging student-faculty
collaboration, we will also be recognizing and rewarding an outstanding faculty
member who will serve as a mentor to colleagues. We are very grateful for the
Burrys' wonderful gift, and on behalf of the entire St. Lawrence community,
I extend our heartfelt appreciation for their generosity."
