RENOVATIONS TO SLU'S BURKMAN GYM TO BE CELEBRATED

CANTON – Recent renovations to the Burkman Gymnasium at St. Lawrence University
will be celebrated with a ceremony on Saturday, December 11, at 2:30 p.m.,
between the women's basketball game and men's basketball game that day. Both
teams will play Alfred University teams in the Burkman Gymnasium, and all are
welcome to join in the dedication ceremony.
Earlier this year, several donors to St. Lawrence University announced
their intention to support the renovation project, which began in April and was
completed recently.
Preston Carlisle '52 and his wife, Joan Carlisle, of Lisbon, New York,
joined Trustee Emeritus John Priesing and his wife, Madryn, parents of John '94,
of Bronxville, New York, in making leadership commitments of over $200,000 each
for the project, according to Vice President for University Advancement Michael
P. Archibald. Joining the Carlisles and the Priesings in supporting this effort
with leadership gifts are Dave Jennings '74, former New York Jets punter and
current sports broadcaster of Upper Saddle River, New Jersey; and Francis
LaMantia '88 and Wendy Hubbert LaMantia '91 of Wilton, Connecticut.
One hundred percent of the costs associated with the project, approximately
$500,000, were funded by private donors, who approached the University with the
gifts necessary to accomplish the renovation.
Included in the renovation are a new floor, a new center court and new
bleachers on both sides. The design is by the architectural firm of MacLachlan,
Cornelius & Filoni, who also designed the new Student Center and Brewer Bookstore,
among other projects at St. Lawrence.
Burkman Gymnasium opened in 1970, when the then-new Augsbury Physical
Education Complex was a state-of-the-art facility. The gym had not had a
renovation in the 34 years it has been used for basketball and volleyball
intercollegiate team practice and competitions, as well as for intramural and
recreational activities.
"The new reconfiguration with bleachers on both sides will give fans
improved seating from which to enjoy the games," said Margaret F. Strait,
director of athletics. "We're very grateful to the Carlisles and the Priesings,
and all the donors who value and support our athletics and recreation programs."
