SLU Gallery Exhibiting Nature Photos By Library Assistant
CANTON - An exhibition called "Wild Things: Nature Photography by Melissa J. Burchard" will be in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University from May 28 through July 9. There will be a reception for Burchard on Saturday, June 20, at 3 p.m. in the gallery.
Burchard is a library assistant in the Launders Science Library on campus. She says, "My earliest memories are of turning over rocks and wading into ponds and streams to find insects and frogs when my mother took me on bird-watching trips. Though I am still compelled to pick up a toad now and then, I have recently discovered a new way to capture wildlife and share it with a larger audience without disturbing the natural world."
In 2004, Burchard says, her mother purchased a camera for her. "From eagles nesting at Blake Reservoir to waterfalls and wildflowers on the Stone Valley Trail, I am far from lacking subjects." In addition to North Country images, the exhibition includes photographs taken during trips to Peru and Costa Rica.
