EDUCATIONAL POLICY EXPERT TO LECTURE AT SLU

CANTON - Nicholas C. Burbules, professor of educational
policy studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign,
will give the Third Annual Dean's Lecture at St. Lawrence
University on Monday, February 11, at 4:30 p.m. in the Hepburn
Auditorium. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Burbules' topic for the lecture is "Dialogue and Third
Spaces." Dialogue in teaching can be about the formation of
"border zones" that create a shared discursive space for teachers
and students to discuss issues at hand, without which teachers
and students can often talk past each other, especially on contexts
of cultural difference.
Burbules is the author of several books, including Dialogue
in Teaching: Theory and Practice, Teaching and Its Predicaments,
Watch IT: The Risks and Promises of New Information Technologies
for Education, Globalization and Education: Critical Perspectives
and Postpositivism and Educational Research.
The Dean's Lecture at St. Lawrence is sponsored by an
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Center for Teaching and Learning
grant and a William and Flora Hewlett Liberal Arts Program grant.
