RUSSIAN STUDENT AT SLU EXHIBITING WORK IN ART GALLERY

CANTON - "A Boy and His Agenda," an exhibition of work by
St. Lawrence University senior Alexei S. Boulokhov, will be
in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery on campus from November 7
through December 20. It includes images, installations, and
performance artworks that attempt to challenge the conventions
of representing sexual orientation.
Boulokhov, of Novocherkassk, Russia, is a speech and theatre
major, and has appeared in many stage productions, earning a
Joan M. Fuzak Drama Award. He is also a recipient of a St. Lawrence
Theological Society Award and a Don Makosky Gender Studies
Award for his involvement with the student organization PRIDES
(People Recognizing Individuality, Diversity, and Equality of
Sexualities) and for his contributions to a safer, more
open-minded campus community. His project "Gay Fantasy and Queer
Reality: History of Representation of Homosexuality in American
Film" was selected for a 2001 University Fellows grant. This
summer, he traveled as a Tanner Fellow to Poland, the Czech
Republic and Germany to research the emergence of "queer culture"
and the gay rights movement in Eastern Europe. With his digital
feature film Flamer, a gay coming-of-age story set in a small
northern New York town, Boulokhov was a participant in the
Kodak American Pavilion Student Filmmaker Program at the 55th
Cannes Film Festival.
