Expert On Artist Hieronymus Bosch To Speak At SLU
CANTON - "Exploring Hell with Hieronymus Bosch" is the title of a talk by scholar Walter S. Gibson, emeritus professor in the history of art at Case Western Reserve University, on Thursday, April 7, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center at St. Lawrence University. The talk, part of the Jeanne Scribner Cashin lecture series, is open to the public, free of charge.
A leading U.S. scholar of Late Medieval and Renaissance Art History, Gibson has published several books and articles on Bosch, as well as on Pieter Bruegel and other Renaissance artists. His lecture draws material from a book that he is currently writing on images of death, heaven and hell in the late Middle Ages.
Bosch's work, including the well-known triptych "The Garden of Earthly Delights," used fantastic imagery to illustrate moral and religious concepts.
Before retiring from a 30-year career at Case Western in 1997, Gibson held the Andrew W. Mellon Professorship of the Humanities. He has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1978.
