SLU PLANS EVENTS FOR 'BODY BEAUTIFUL WEEK'

CANTON - A week of events celebrating bodies - all shapes
and sizes of healthy bodies - is being planned at St. Lawrence
University.
The second annual "Body Beautiful Week" will take
place on campus March 10 through 14. Inspired by "Love Your
Body Day" (sponsored by the National Organization for Women)
and Eating Disorders Awareness Week (sponsored by the
National Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention
Organization), Body Beautiful Week is organized by
St. Lawrence's counseling services office staff to educate
students about healthy decisions regarding eating, exercise,
weight loss and body image; to give students ideas for
helping friends they may be concerned about; and to provide
an opportunity for students to speak with peers about more
personal issues relating to their own eating and exercise
patterns.
Planned events, which are all open to the public,
include:
	- Monday, March 10, author River Huston will give
a presentation titled "It's None of My Business What Oprah
Weighs," at 8 p.m. in Eben Holden; a reception will follow.
A regular contributor to various magazines, Huston has a
degree in physical education from Hunter College, is an
advocate for women's health issues and gives lectures
around the country on sex, body image, addiction and HIV.
Through slides and narrative, Huston exposes the subtle
but deadly messages people are given every day regarding
body image. Using humor and insight, she explores different
ways for students to help build skills to heal and
nurture self-esteem.
	- Tuesday, March 11, a faculty/staff panel will
discuss and answer questions about eating disorders, body
image and healthy habits, beginning at 7 p.m., in the
formal lounge of Dean-Eaton Residence Hall.
	- Thursday, March 13, a "Body Beautiful Fair" will
be held in the Northstar Pub dining area of the E.J. Noble
University Center from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be free massages,
a henna artist, gentle yoga stretching, "clay play," an
opportunity to create your own mandala and information from
services around campus on healthy habits for exercise,
eating and mental health.
Following the fair, at 9 p.m. in the Java Barn,
members of the University community will "speak out," through
song, speech, dance or other methods of expression, about
topics discussed through the week. Healthy snacks will be
provided.
All week long, there will be a variety of displays at
the University Center about respecting your body by reducing
alcohol intake; quitting smoking; avoiding burnout; and healthy
eating and exercise habits.
