ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY BOARD MEETS

CANTON - The St. Lawrence University Board of Trustees held its winter
meeting on campus Saturday, February 20. Included in their actions were
the following:

New Trustee Elected Sarah Johnson Lufkin, a children's clothing retailer from Hillsborough, California, and a 1982 graduate of St. Lawrence, was elected to a six-year term on the Board of Trustees, effective July 1, 1999. Lufkin formerly worked as a supervisor of mutual funds and a portfolio manager for Franklin Resources Inc. in San Mateo, California. She majored in biology at St. Lawrence and was chair of the California leukemia campaign for 1998-99. Lufkin has been active as a volunteer for the University, as a career advisor and in fund-raising.

New Trustee Positions Created The Board of Trustees voted to create two new trustee positions, the McCurdy/Sprague Trustees, to be filled by two alumni who, at the time of their election, will have graduated from the University no more than 10 years earlier. The positions were created to assure representation on the Board from graduates close to the St. Lawrence student experience. The new positions are named after two early graduates of St. Lawrence: Delos McCurdy was one of two men to receive a degree in the first graduating class in 1865. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and went on to a career in law and served as a trustee. Sarah Sprague, a native of Gouverneur, was one of two women to receive a degree in the second graduating class in 1866. She went on to receive a Ph.D. in education and was a force in education all of her life, authoring several educational primers. St. Lawrence is asking for nominations from among its alumni ranks for the posts; nominations must be received by April 15.

Tuition and Fees By fall 1999, St. Lawrence University residence halls will be "technology ready." This weekend, the Board of Trustees approved a change that allows immediate access to technology services and eliminates the need for students to purchase services separately. All rooms will have access to the computer network (including Internet access), local phone service and cable TV with cost of services incorporated into the room charge. Separate charges for laundry (no more coin-operated machines) and for copies of transcripts were eliminated also. The Board approved an increase in the comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board) of 4.25%, from $28,545 to $30,110, for academic year 1999-2000. The total change from 1998-99 charges is 5.5%, as these residential services will now be incorporated into the fee structure automatically, improving student services and access. Students, however, will not be asked to pay more next year than they now pay, in separate bills, for these residential services.

Renovation and Construction Projects The Board agreed to fund renovations to Appleton Arena; construction of a new softball field; renovations to three practice fields; renovations to the University's golf course; repositioning of lights at a new field for intramural sports use; and the construction of new parking areas across from Appleton Arena. The plans are part of St. Lawrence's on-going Master Facilities Plan. Plans were also reviewed for fitness center; squash courts; training center and multipurpose and storage space in the Augsbury Physical Education Center, and further details of those projects will be considered at future meetings. Approval was also given for the installation of a security-card access system for 11 major residence halls on campus. Trustees also agreed to adopt a set of architectural guidelines developed following a series of meetings on campus with students, faculty and staff, to assure that future renovation and construction projects in the Master Plan will blend contemporary needs with the historical aesthetics of the campus and its buildings.
