'BLACK HISTORY MUSIC' TO BE PERFORMED AT SLU

CANTON -- Amiri Baraka and Blue Ark will perform in "Black History
Music" at St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, October 12, at 7:30 p.m.
in Gulick Theatre. The performance is part of the St. Lawrence Writers
Series.
Baraka, the poet, playwright and essayist who formerly published
under the name LeRoi Jones, is considered one of the most famous and
influential African American writers alive today. He has excelled in
all literary and dramatic forms, producing plays such as Dutchman, which
won the Village Voice's Obie award, and musical histories such as
"Blues People: Negro Music in White America." "Black History Music"
is his most recent theatre piece.
Noted as a pioneer and innovator in poetic and dramatic circles, Baraka
weaves both forms with the melodies of gospel, blues and jazz classics
in a theatrical performance of an historical journey. Blue Ark includes
six musicians -- Robert Banks, Rudy Walker, Herbie Morgan, Rachim Sahu
and James Orange -- and the poets Halim Suliman and Amina Baraka, his
wife.
Amiri Baraka is also a professor of African studies at the State
University of New York at Stony Brook.
