SLU Graduate To Give Campus Talk On Glaciers
CANTON - St. Lawrence University Class of 1975 graduate Andrew G. Fountain, chair of the geology and geography department at Portland State University, will give a lecture titled "Glaciers and the Near Future of Global Sea Level Change" on Friday, October 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall at St. Lawrence. Part of the University's Alumni Geology Conference, the lecture is open to the public, free of charge.
Named the Oregon Academy of Science 2008 Outstanding Oregon Scientist for his work on glaciers, Fountain worked for the U.S. Geological Survey for more than 20 years, studying glacial hydrology. He has won numerous prizes and awards for his research, and published widely. In 2004, the U.S. Geological Survey named the Fountain Glacier in Antarctica in his honor.
Every third year, as a part of the St. Lawrence University Geology Alumni Conference, participants sponsor a lecture in memory of former geology professor Robert O. Bloomer and his wife, Vera. Lecturers are distinguished scientists or professionals chosen from among the alumni because of their expertise on a topic of significant public interest. The theme of this year's conference is "St. Lawrence Geology from Pole to Pole, As Exemplified by the Career of Albert P. Crary '31." Crary, a geophysicist, was the first human to have stood on both the North and South Poles.
