FUEL EXPLORATION IS TOPIC OF LECTURE BY SLU ALUMNUS
CANTON - William A. Van Wie, a 1967 St. Lawrence University graduate, will give
the 2007 R.O. and Vera Bloomer Lecture, on the topic "Exploration for Oil and
Gas in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico: New Discoveries, New Challenges." The
lecture, open to the public, free of charge, is on Friday, September 14, at
8 p.m. in Eben Holden Conference Center on campus. It is part of the sixth
St. Lawrence University Geology Alumni Conference, being held on campus
September 13 through 15.
Van Wie is vice president and general manager, exploration, for Devon
Energy Corporation in Houston, Texas. The geosciences have played an
important role in the discovery and production of oil and natural gas
in the Gulf of Mexico, which has contributed greatly to securing
energy for the United States. Van Wie's presentation will include
information on the geological evolution of the Gulf of Mexico;
breakthroughs in seismic technologies; the economics of business in
the gulf region; and future challenges.
Van Wie joined Devon in 1999 following the company's acquisition of
PennzEnergy, where he served as senior vice president. He began his
career with Tenneco and was also employed by Chevron, Pennzoil and
Amerada Hess. In 2005, he was appointed to the new position of vice
president and general manager, exploration, for Devon, with responsibility
for coordinating its global exploration activities. Van Wie had been vice
president and general manager of Devon's Gulf Division. He is treasurer
of the American Geological Institute Foundation, a member of the National Ocean Industries
Association's Board of Directors, vice chairman of the Independent Petroleum
Association of America's Offshore Committee and serves as a delegate for the
American Association of Petroleum Geologists. After graduating from St. Lawrence
with a degree in geology, he earned a master's and the Ph.D. from the University
of Cincinnati.
Devon Energy Corporation is an Oklahoma City-based independent energy company
engaged in oil and gas exploration, production and property acquisitions.
It is the largest U.S.-based independent oil and gas producer.
