BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATED AT ST. LAWRENCE
CANTON - Black History Month will be celebrated at St. Lawrence
University throughout February with a variety of talks, presentations
and performances.
The schedule of activities -- all of which are open to the
public free of charge --is:
Feb. 1 - Opening ceremonies with the New Restoration Gospel Choir,
7 p.m., Gunnison Memorial Chapel
Feb. 4 - Panel discussion on issues of importance to African American
men, 7 p.m., Dean-Eaton
Feb. 6 - Opportunity to register with the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), 4 p.m., E.J. Noble University
Center Formal Lounge
Feb. 8 - Presentation on the history of Kenya, 7 p.m., Dean-Eaton
Feb. 11 - Panel discussion on issues of importance to African American
women, 7 p.m, Dean-Eaton
Feb. 15 and 16 - Screenings of the film Beloved, directed by Toni Morrison
and based on her book, 7 and 10 p.m., Gulick Theatre
Feb. 17 - Presentations by faculty members Kelly Patterson, Jeffrey Campbell
Graduate Fellow in sociology; Carlos Ramirez-Sosa, Jeffrey Campbell Graduate
Fellow in biology; and Calvin Moore, visiting instructor in sociology, on
their experiences in academia, 7 p.m., Dean-Eaton
Feb. 18 - "Of Ebony Embers: Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance," a theatre
work conceived and performed by The Core Ensemble, a jazz group, 7 p.m.,

Feb. 20 - Presentation on Marcus Garvey and Langston Hughes by 1998 St. Lawrence

Feb. 23 - Presentation by Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar Manthia Diawara on
"The Changing Historical Meaning of the 'Stereotype' in Popular Culture,"

Feb. 25 - Presentation by poet Nikki Giovanni on her recent book, Racism 101,
