'THE CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS' TO BE PERFORMED AT SLU

CANTON -- The Conference of the Birds, a theatrical adaptation
of a 12th-century Persian epic poem, will be performed at St. Lawrence
University April 7 through 10 at 8 p.m. each evening in the Gulick
Theatre.
Performances are free; tickets are available at the Gulick Theatre
box office.
The stage play is by Jean-Claude Carriere and Peter Brook, based on
a poem by Farid Uddi Attar.
The tale depicts the Sufi Way, a spiritual journey toward absolute
devotion to, submission to, and ultimate union with God through a
renunciation of the world and an annihilation of the self. In this
other-worldly fable, the birds of the world are challenged to set out
on a pilgrimage to find their King. Although many of the birds are fearful
and resist going by presenting myriad excuses, eventually they embark on a
quest that will test their conviction.
The Conference of the Birds is directed by Janet Cooper. The
production staff includes John Larrance, set and lighting; Hilary Oak,
costume design; Alice Hessert, audio; and Andrea Nouryeh, dramaturg.
Original music has been composed for the play by Professor of Music
Norman Hessert.
A web site has been constructed to provide information about the
play throughout the production; it can be found at
http://www.stlawu.edu/jcoo:http/index.htm.
