St. Lawrence Writers Series Kicks Off With Bill McKibben
CANTON - An appearance by environmental author Bill McKibben begins the St. Lawrence Writers Series for the 2008-2009 academic year. McKibben will be on campus on Thursday, September 4, for three events, all open to the public. The appearances are also the first events in this year's Contemporary Issues Forum.
At 10:10 a.m. in Gulick Theatre, he will give a lecture titled "Deep Economy: Economics as if the Earth Mattered"; at 2 p.m., also in Gulick Theatre, McKibben will host a town meeting and public conversation about climate change and the climate change movement; at 8 p.m. in Eben
Holden, he will read from his recent works.
McKibben's newest book is a collection of essays, The Bill McKibben Reader: Pieces from an Active Life. He is the author of a dozen nonfiction books, among them The End of Nature and Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future. A former staff writer for The New Yorker, he writes regularly for Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly and The New York Review of Books, among other publications. In April of 2007, McKibben organized the Step It Up national day of rallies, the largest global warming protest to date. He is a scholar in residence at Middlebury and received the North Country Citation from St. Lawrence in 2002.
