SLU YOUNG ARTIST RECITAL FEATURES JOLLE GREENLEAF

CANTON - Soprano Jolle Greenleaf, with Holly Chatham on
harpsichord and organ, will perform in the Gretchen Bence
Young Artist Recital at St. Lawrence University on Sunday,
April 27, at 4 p.m. in the Gilbert Recital Hall, Griffiths
Arts Center. The program is called "Italia Mia: A Tour of
17th Century Italy Featuring Music By, For and About Women,"
featuring composers Claudio Monteverdi, Barbara Strozzi,
Giacomo Carrissimi, Francesca Caccini and Girolamo Frescobaldi.
Greenleaf, a native Californian, is a widely sought-after
vocalist specializing in historical styles. Following the
completion of her master's degree from the Mannes College
of Music, she studied at The Royal Conservatory in The Hague,
Netherlands, on a fellowship from The Frank Huntington Beebe
Fund for Musicians. She often appears as soloist in performances
of major works, and has sung in over 70 Bach cantata and motet
performances in New York City and beyond.
Chatham is a performer of wide range and skill, sought
after especially for her continuo and improvisational skills.
She is called on to perform within many genres of music, from
piano to early keyboards, Broadway to classical. Chatham is
hailed as possessing "a wonderful improvisational flair" and
"true mastery" of the keyboard.
The Young Artists Series was established by contributions
from the family and friends of Gretchen Bence, a 1950 graduate
of St. Lawrence and a professional opera singer, following her
receipt of an honorary degree from St. Lawrence in 1985.
