JO ANN BEARD BRINGS HER CREATIVE NON-FICTION TO SLU

CANTON - Jo Ann Beard, an author of creative non-fiction works, 
will speak and read from recent work in an appearance at St. Lawrence 
University on Wednesday, March 31.
	The event, part of the St. Lawrence Writers Series, will take 
place at 8 p.m. in Herring-Cole. It is open to the public, free of 
charge.
	Beard is the winner of a 1997 Whiting Foundation Award for her 
book The Boys of My Youth, a collection of 12 autobiographical sketches 
about Beard's disillusionment with romance. One of the stories, "The 
Fourth State of Matter," tells of the murder of six of Beard's co-workers 
at the University of Iowa by a lone gunman; it was also published in The 
New Yorker.
	Her stories have also appeared in Story, Iowa Woman, The Iowa 
Review and Prairie Schooner. Beard lives in Tarrytown, New York.
