SLU SCIENTIST NAMED TO NEW PROFESSORSHIP

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University Assistant Professor of Biology
Erika L. Barthelmess has been named the first recipient of the
Grace J. Fippinger Junior Professorship in the Sciences, President
Daniel F. Sullivan has announced. The appointment, effective
January 1, 2001, is for five years.
The professorship honors Fippinger, a 1948 graduate of
St. Lawrence, who died in 1996. It was created by her estate and a
grant from the Pfizer Corporation, on whose Board of Directors Fippinger
sat for many years. She began work with the New York Telephone Company
after her graduation, and served in a number of positions with the firm,
ultimately becoming the first woman officer in the Bell system, later
NYNEX. She retired as vice president, corporate secretary and treasurer
in 1990. Fippinger was awarded an Alumni Citation and an honorary Doctor
of Humane Letters degree by St. Lawrence, in recognition of her devotion
to her alma mater.
Barthelmess is a graduate of Earlham College, with a Ph.D. from
the University of Kansas; she has conducted post-doctoral research at
Vanderbilt University. A member of the faculty since 1999, Barthelmess'
current research is focused on the impact of habitat fragmentation on
animal populations.
