WRITER ANDREA BARRETT TO SPEAK AT SLU

CANTON -- Novelist Andrea Barrett will speak and read 
from her recent work in an appearance at St. Lawrence 
University on Wednesday, November 10, at 8 p.m. in the 
Common Room of Sykes Residence Hall, as part of this 
year's Writers Series. The event is open to the public, 
free of charge.
	Barrett is the author of five novels: Lucid Stars, 
Secret Harmonies, The Middle Kingdom, The Forms of Water, 
and most recently, The Voyage of the Narwhal. Publishers 
Weekly said about the latter novel, "Barrett delivers a 
stunning novel in which a meticulous grasp of historical 
and natural detail, insight into characters and pulse-pounding 
action are integrated into a dramatic adventure with deep 
moral resonance." 
	Her collection of short fiction, Ship Fever, received 
the 1996 National Book Award, and her stories have appeared 
in such anthologies as American Voices: Best Short Fiction by 
Contemporary Authors and the 1995 edition of Best American 
Short Stories. Barrett has received Guggenheim and National 
Endowment for the Arts fellowships and  teaches in the MFA 
program for writers at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, 
North Carolina.
