JOURNALIST BEN BAGDIKIAN TO SPEAK AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON -- Journalist Ben Bagdikian, author of The Media Monopoly, 
will give a lecture titled "Goodbye Gutenberg, Hello Bill Gates? A 
Reflection on the Need for Reflection" on Tuesday, October 17, at 7 p.m. 
in Herring-Cole Hall at St. Lawrence University. The event, the fall 
Friends of Owen D. Young and Launders Libraries lecture, is open to the 
public, free of charge; a reception will be held following the lecture.
	Bagdikian has won most of the top prizes in American journalism. 
He has been a Washington bureau chief and foreign correspondent for The 
Providence Journal, an assistant managing editor of The Washington Post 
and a dean of the graduate school of journalism at the University of California 
at Berkeley. Bagdikian is also the author of a number of books, including 
In the Midst of Plenty: The Poor in America (1964), The Information Machine 
(1970) and Double Vision: Reflections on My Heritage, Life and Profession 
(1995).
	His talk will address current economic and technological transitions 
in the media, and the consequent impact on public discourse.
