Bach 'Marathon' Planned At St. Lawrence, Marking Composer's 325th Birthday
CANTON - A "marathon" celebrating composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) will take place at St. Lawrence University on Saturday, March 20, from 4 to 9:30 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The event, which marks the 325th anniversary of Bach's birth, is open to the public, free of charge.
Those wishing to listen are encouraged to come at any time, stay for as long as they like and leave quietly when they must. The audience may also, if they wish, bring along a box ("Bach's") supper to enjoy while hearing the variety of performers and pieces.
Scheduled to perform for the event are:
- 4 p.m., Kyle P. Ramey, organist and choirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Church in Watertown
- 4:30 p.m., Carl A. Bingle, organist for the First Presbyterian Church of Watertown and the Northern Choral Society
- 5 p.m., Nelly Maude Case, organist and handbell choir director for the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton
- 5:30 p.m., Lansing Laraway, director of music for the First United Methodist Church; Julia Sprague, contralto; Barbara Philips-Farley, piano instructor at St. Lawrence; Arlene Babich, flute; and the Ad Hoc Singers of the University
- 6 p.m., Benjamin Stone, Potsdam High School student
- 6:15 p.m., Laura Toland, director of music and co-organist of the First Presbyterian Church in Potsdam
- 6:40 p.m., Natasha Wolpin, area substitute organist
- 7 p.m., Ralph Hastings, dean of the St. Lawrence River Chapter of the American Guild of Organists
- 7:30 p.m., Rebecca MacKellar, organist and choir director of Trinity Episcopal Church in Potsdam
- 8 p.m., St. Lawrence's Early Music Singers, directed by Barry Torres
- 8:30 p.m., Sondra Goldsmith Proctor, musician-in-residence at St. Lawrence
