BERGER, REZELMAN, CANIA RECEIVE SLU AWARDS

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University faculty and staff received awards
for outstanding service at the Convocation and Matriculation ceremony
held on campus August 28, marking the start of the academic year.
Piskor Professor of English Thomas L. Berger received the
J. Calvin Keene Award, established in 1975 and given to a faculty
member in recognition of "high standards of personal scholarship,
effective teaching and moral concern." A member of the faculty since
1971, Berger is a graduate of Dartmouth College, with a master's degree
and Ph.D. from Duke University. A well-known Shakespearian scholar,
editor and bibliographer, Berger was also cited by Vice President of the
University and Dean of Academic Affairs Thomas B. Coburn, who presented
the award, as a "unique, demanding and memorable classroom teacher," as
well as the creator of satirical publications about campus life.
The Louis and Frances Maslow Award was given posthumously to
Betsy Cogger Rezelman, a fine arts professor who died in January of
this year. The award goes to the faculty member who has shown "the most
interest in and understanding of the education and welfare of the student
body as a whole," and was accepted by Rezelman's daughter, Alexa. She had
been a member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1981 and was a collector
and scholar of African art, as well as other subjects in art history.
Presenting the award, Coburn said, "During her years with us, she built a
career that satisfied both her love of art history and her great gift for
working with people, particularly young people."
Lisa M. Cania, associate vice president for University communications,
received the John P. "Jack" Taylor Distinguished Career Service Award, which
was established in 1995 at Taylor's retirement as dining services director.
The award recognizes distinguished service to the University by an
administrator who has worked at least 12 years at St. Lawrence and who sustains
the high standards of performance exemplified by Taylor. A graduate of Wells
College with a master's degree from St. Lawrence, Cania has been a staff member
at the University since 1987. Presenting the award to Cania, President
Daniel F. Sullivan said that she is "unfailingly responsive, a 'can-do'
person in every area of her responsibility, willing to take on new
responsibilities whenever asked, and asked often because she has such
far-ranging and diverse skills."
