ST. LAWRENCE FACULTY, STAFF HONORED AT CEREMONY

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University faculty and staff received awards
for outstanding service at the Convocation and Matriculation ceremony
held on campus August 23, marking the start of the academic year.
Professor of Psychology Alan Searleman received the J. Calvin
Keene Award, established in 1975 and given to a faculty member in recognition
of "high standards of personal scholarship, effective teaching and moral
concern." Searleman is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst and earned the Ph.D. at SUNY Stony Brook. He joined the St. Lawrence
faculty in 1978 and has authored three books and many scholarly articles and
papers, on topics including memory and left-handedness. Searleman has been
interviewed and quoted widely in the popular press on those topics as well,
and he has served on many University committees.
Associate Professor of Sociology Ronald Flores was given the Louis
and Frances Maslow Award, which goes to the faculty member who has shown
"the most interest in and understanding of the education and welfare of the
student body as a whole." A member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1993,
Flores earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Fordham University, and
the Ph.D. from Brown University. He has participated in the First-Year Program
and served as an advisor for a number of student groups, especially those
promoting increased diversity. In the 1998-99 academic year, Flores served
as chair of the Faculty Council.
Harlan Lowry, manager of catering and purchasing for dining and
conference services, received the John P. "Jack" Taylor Distinguished Career
Service Award, which was established in 1995 at Taylor's retirement as dining
services director. The award recognizes distinguished service to the University
by an administrator who has worked at least 12 years at St. Lawrence and who
sustains the high standards of performance exemplified by Taylor.
A Gouverneur native, Lowry attended SUNY Canton and worked as a manager
for Friendly Restaurant Corp. branches in Sterling Heights, Michigan, and
Elyria, Ohio, before joining the St. Lawrence staff in 1984.
