A List 8/30/99 ST. LAWRENCE FACULTY, STAFF HONORED AT CEREMONY CANTON -- St. Lawrence University faculty and staff received awards for outstanding service at the Convocation and Matriculation ceremony held on campus August 23, marking the start of the academic year. Professor of Psychology Alan Searleman received the J. Calvin Keene Award, established in 1975 and given to a faculty member in recognition of "high standards of personal scholarship, effective teaching and moral concern." Searleman is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and earned the Ph.D. at SUNY Stony Brook. He joined the St. Lawrence faculty in 1978 and has authored three books and many scholarly articles and papers, on topics including memory and left-handedness. Searleman has been interviewed and quoted widely in the popular press on those topics as well, and he has served on many University committees. Associate Professor of Sociology Ronald Flores was given the Louis and Frances Maslow Award, which goes to the faculty member who has shown "the most interest in and understanding of the education and welfare of the student body as a whole." A member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1993, Flores earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Fordham University, and the Ph.D. from Brown University. He has participated in the First-Year Program and served as an advisor for a number of student groups, especially those promoting increased diversity. In the 1998-99 academic year, Flores served as chair of the Faculty Council. Harlan Lowry, manager of catering and purchasing for dining and conference services, received the John P. "Jack" Taylor Distinguished Career Service Award, which was established in 1995 at Taylor's retirement as dining services director. The award recognizes distinguished service to the University by an administrator who has worked at least 12 years at St. Lawrence and who sustains the high standards of performance exemplified by Taylor. A Gouverneur native, Lowry attended SUNY Canton and worked as a manager for Friendly Restaurant Corp. branches in Sterling Heights, Michigan, and Elyria, Ohio, before joining the St. Lawrence staff in 1984.-30- Back To News Releases
