St. Lawrence Security & Safey Adds ATV To Fleet

CANTON - An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) has been added to the fleet of the St. Lawrence University security and safety department, allowing officers to reach wooded areas of the 1,000-acre campus more efficiently.

Director of Safety and Security Pat Gagnon says that while not many campus security forces have begun using the vehicles, some that have large, relatively undeveloped spaces have added them, to expand options and improve response time.

The two-seat, four-wheel, off-road vehicle was purchased through a local vendor, Gagnon notes, and will allow officers to reach areas of the campus "not feasible or practical by foot patrol." In addition to enabling response in a variety of weather conditions, Gagnon also indicated that the vehicle is very fuel-efficient.

Members of the security and safety department also use bicycles for transport around campus, and have conducted training programs on the use of bicycles by police and safety personnel.
