Alexander String Quartet To Perform At St. Lawrence September 24
CANTON - The Alexander String Quartet, St. Lawrence University's quartet-in-residence, will perform in concert on Friday, September 24, at 8 p.m. in Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall, Griffiths Arts Center. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
They will perform the Shostakovich-Grafilo Prelude & Fugue in C Major, Op. 87, Nos. 1 and 20; Beethoven's "Elegischer Gesang," Op. 118, with the Laurentian Singers; Beethoven's Quartet in F Minor, Op. 95, "Serioso"; and Schubert's Quartet in D Minor, D. 810, "Death and the Maiden."
In addition to this formal concert, the Alexander will also give an informal matinee performance, on Thursday, September 23, at noon in Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall. At this performance, also open to the public free of charge, members of the Alexander will provide anecdotal commentary about the pieces, the composers and their life as a quartet.
The Alexander String Quartet, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2006, includes Zakarias Grafilo, violin; Frederick Lifsitz, violin; Paul Yarbrough, viola; and Sandy Wilson, cello. In 2000, the Alexander String Quartet received an honorary degree from St. Lawrence. While in residence at St. Lawrence, from September 21 through 24, they will also visit classes in a variety of departments across the curriculum and hold workshops for music students.
