ANTAEUS DANCE COMPANY AT ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY NOV. 12

CANTON – St. Lawrence University hosts the Antaeus Dance Company in performance on Friday,
November 12, at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. The event is open to the public, free of charge,
and is sponsored by the St. Lawrence University Alcoa Foundation Cultural Affairs Program
Fund.
Antaeus Dance is a Cleveland-based professional dance company "dedicated to the
creation and presentation of intelligent and well-crafted danceworks that address issues
of human connection." The company takes its name from the mythological figure Antaeus, a
giant and athlete who gained strength through contact with the Earth. If thrown to the
ground, this offspring of Mother Earth could bounce back with renewed strength and vigor.
This sense of connection to the Earth, or groundedness and weight, is a hallmark of
Artistic Director Joan Meggitt's work.
At St. Lawrence, Antaeus will perform:
	- Meggitt's Holding Patterns, an "intimate dancework that explores a shadowy
dreamscape that transforms three vulnerable individuals into trusting companions."
	- Hidden Dialogue, a multi-media work with "interpretations of Steve Reich's
contemporary music and intensely physical explorations of personal gesture."
	- An excerpt from Ladies Errant, a set of irreverent duets "featuring two ladies
who follow, lead and even mislead one another with fast foot work, frantic hand gestures
and knowing glances."
	- Apassionata, a solo that "highlights the impressive range – from technical
bravura and physical strength to subtle gestures and utter vulnerability" of dancer
Sharon Manuel.
	- The Usual Suspects, an original farce set to music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
While at St. Lawrence, members of the company will also teach master classes
in modern dance.
