PEACE ACTIVIST TO SPEAK AT SLU
CANTON - Anna Gyorgy, author of No Nukes: Everyone's Guide to Nuclear Power (1980),
will give a talk titled "An Ocean Apart: An American Abroad Reflects on U.S. Power and
Action for Peace" on Thursday, October 13, at 7 p.m. in Herring-Cole Hall at St. Lawrence
University. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Gyorgy lives in Berlin, Germany, and is the founder and coordinator of "Women and Life
on Earth," an international Web site project. She was
active from 1975-1983 in the anti-nuclear/safe energy movement. Gyorgy was director
of the Public Citizen's Critical Mass Energy Project 1981-1983, and worked on the
environment desk of the first Jesse Jackson presidential campaign in 1984. From
1985-2000 she lived in Ireland, Germany, Sierra Leone, Mali and South Korea.
She has lived in Berlin since 2001, and has been director of the German association
"Women and Life on Earth: women in international cooperation for peace, ecology and
social justice" since its formation in 2003. In her talk, Gyorgy will address issues
of peace, ecology, racism and poverty from an international perspective.
