A List 2/16/04 TELEMARK SKI PRESENTATION OFFERED AT SLU CANTON – "A Ski Journey to the Chinese Altai" is the title of a slide presentation to be given by professional telemark skiers Heather Paul and Naheed Henderson on Wednesday, February 18, at 7 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge; door prizes will also be given at the event. Two-time National Telemark Champion Paul and Henderson, a 1998 St. Lawrence graduate, are among a group of skiers who recently skied the Chinese Altai Mountains. The Altai Mountains are a vast, remote mountain system in Central Asia, running roughly northwest to southeast through the region where Russia, Kazakhstan, China, and Mongolia meet. Despite their relatively small size, the Altais are extremely rugged and picturesque, with rich forests stretching high into mountain valleys and glaciers in the higher valleys. The team began the first leg of the trek in the remote Chinese Altai Mountains, then navigated Lake Kanas to reach the valley on its far side to reach their desired location, far away from more populated villages.
