CHALLENGES OF INDIGENOUS GOVERNANCE EXAMINED IN SLU TALK

CANTON -- Taiaiake Alfred, a scholar known for his work on indigenous 
traditions of government and politics in Native American communities, 
will speak on the topic "Transcending Colonial Mentalities: Indigenous 
Governance and the 21st Century Challenge" on Friday, October 29, at 
7:15 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center at St. Lawrence 
University. The event is open to the public, free of charge, and will 
be followed by a book-signing.
	Alfred advises numerous nations on leadership and governance 
and is a senior advisor on land issues for the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake 
and the Carrier-Sekani Tribal Council. He is the author of Heeding the 
Voice of Our Ancestors: Kahnawake Mohawk Politics and the Rise of Native 
Nationalism (1995) and Peace, Power and Righteousness: An Indigenous 
Manifesto (1999). He lives in the Songhees nation territory, where he is 
director of the Indigenous Governance Programs at the University of 
Victoria.
