SLU's Brush Gallery Exhibits Prints, Drawings By Senior Alexa Unser
CANTON - "Perched On a Thread Around a Spool," an exhibition of prints and
drawings by Alexa A. Unser '08, will be in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery
at St. Lawrence University from April 17 through May 31. Unser will give a
talk on the exhibition, which is her senior-year project, on Wednesday,
April 23, at 5 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Art Center; the event,
open to the public free of charge, will be followed by a reception in
the gallery.
Unser states, "My artwork explores the cruel ease with which tragedy
can enter a life and the challenge of the ensuing battle for hope. I
often use the image of an organic 'ribbon' juxtaposed with various found
objects or creatures to examine specific events or circumstances from
my life. Ribbons are tied around these objects and creatures to portray
the inseparability of these two concepts. None of the images are
rendered from actual life, but rather snatched from memory to ensure
that they remain personally intact in their journey from conceptualization
to representation."
Unser, of Bozeman, Montana, is a fine arts major and a graduate of Burke
Mountain Academy in East Burke, Vermont. She studied in Japan and Northern
Ireland, and teamed with Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Melissa
Schulenberg on a project in Guatemala, volunteering with the organization
Safe Passage, which works to provide poor children with educational
opportunities. The two collaborated on a set of 10 prints based on their
experiences, which they offered for sale as a fund-raiser for the organization.
Unser has also worked with SLU Buddies, a volunteer program that pairs
University students with local at-risk children.
