ALDEN NAMED TO INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION POST AT SLU

CANTON -- Professor of English Patricia A. Alden has been
named director of international and intercultural education
at St. Lawrence University. She will begin her duties in the
post, currently held by Associate Professor of English Eve
W. Stoddard, July 1, 2000.
In announcing the appointment, Vice President of the
University and Dean of Academic Affairs Thomas B. Coburn said,
"Pat brings a range of talents and broad support from faculty
and staff to her new position. Most important, in my judgment,
is her modeling of professional development in ways that
benefit both students and colleagues, her involvement in area
studies programs and her broad administrative experience."
Alden will be responsible for administration of the
University's international programs, and have involvement in
St. Lawrence's area studies, global studies and other programs
on campus.
She earned her undergraduate, master's and doctoral
degrees at Stanford University and has been a faculty member
at St. Lawrence since 1976. Alden received a Fulbright grant
in 1990 to study the relationship between literature and
cultural identity in Zimbabwe; she has also directed the
University's program of study in London, England. She received
the J. Calvin Keene Award in 1988.
