CANADIAN POET PART OF SLU WRITERS SERIES

CANTON - One of Canada's most versatile poets, Afua Cooper, will
read from her works in an appearance at St. Lawrence University
on Thursday, December 5, at 8:15 p.m. in Eben Holden. The event
is part of the St. Lawrence Writers Series, and is open to the
public, free of charge.
Cooper is of Afro-Caribbean origin, and incorporates
African riddims and the musical vibes of the Black diaspora in
her poetry, which has a strong sense of place, underscored by a
feminist sensibility. She has published four books of poems, reads
in many venues in many nations, and her work has been anthologized
and recorded. Cooper is the co-author of We're Rooted Here and
They Can't Pull Us Up: Essays in African Canadian Women's History,
and completed a thesis on Henry Bibb, a 19th-century
African-American abolitionist who lived and worked in Ontario.
Cooper teaches sociology at Ryerson University.
