'Africa Week' Celebrated At St. Lawrence University
CANTON - The African Student Union at St. Lawrence University will hold a series of events April 13 through 18 in celebration of Africa Week. All of the events are open to the public, free of charge.
On Monday, April 13, the film Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai will be shown at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall. It is a documentary about the first Nobel Prize winner from Kenya, an environmental activist.
A panel discussion will take place on Thursday, April 16, at 6 p.m., also in the auditorium of Hepburn. The topic "Should Europe/America Pay Reparations to Africa?" will be addressed by Assistant Professor of Sociology Abye Assefa, Assistant Professor of History Elun Gabriel, Assistant Professor of History Matthew Carotenuto, Bupe Mazimba '11, of Zambia, and Francis Ndagijeimana '12, of Uganda.
On Saturday, April 18, African food and music will be featured in a celebration from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Eben Holden. Lucky Diop, a duo of the Kassumai Troupe from Senegal will perform percussive and string instrumental African music; free African food will be available.
