ARTS IN AFRICA SERIES KICKS OFF OCT. 25 AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON -- Ulli Beier, an influential critic, curator, author,
arts advocate and translator, will give the first in a series of
talks at St. Lawrence University that will focus on the direction
African arts may take in the next century.
Beier's lecture will be on Monday, October 25, at 8 p.m. in
Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center; it is open to the public,
free of charge. The event is the 1999 C.L.R. James Lecture in African
Studies.
As editor of the journal Black Orpheus and later as a publisher,
Beier provided a forum for new writers in post-independence Africa. He
is also the editor of Modern Poetry from Africa and an important force
in promoting contemporary African visual arts.
The series "African Arts: Into the Next Millennium" at St. Lawrence
aims to illuminate and celebrate the explosion of creativity seen across
Africa during the past half-century, and reflect on the directions this
momentum may take in the future.
