AFRICAN WRITER TO SPEAK AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON -- Chinua Achebe, one of Africa's best-known writers,
will speak and read from his work at St. Lawrence University
on Monday, April 3, at 8 p.m. in the Common Room of Sykes Residence
Hall. The event, part of both the African Arts: Into the Next
Millennium series and the Writers Series, is open to the public,
free of charge.
His first novel, Things Fall Apart (1958), is a benchmark
in African literature. In subsequent novels, No Longer at Ease, Arrow
of God, A Man of the People, and Anthills of the Savannah, he continues
his exploration of the personal and societal boundaries that confine,
liberate and ultimately define men and women.
Some other works by Achebe include short-story collections
The Sacrificial Egg and Other Stories and Girls at War and Other
Stories; Beware Soul Brother and Other Poems; essays "Morning Yet
On Creation Day" and "Hopes and Impediments"; and children's books
Chike and the River, The Flute and The Drum. In Another Africa, a
1998 collaboration with photographer Robert Lyons, Africa's story
is explored through a kaleidoscope of image, essay, and poetry.
Achebe is the recipient of numerous honors from around the
world in recognition of his literary achievements. He has been
Charles P. Stevenson Professor of Languages and Literature at Bard
College since 1990.
