30TH ANNUAL ADIRONDACK CONFERENCE PLANNED BY SLU
CANTON - St. Lawrence University will hold the 30th annual
Adirondack Conference at the Canaras Conference Center,
Upper Saranac Lake, Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17. The
conference provides an opportunity for key individuals and
groups involved in decision-making in the region to reflect on
the changes of the past 30 years and look ahead to their hopes
for the next 20 years.
A performance of "old-time" music by the Saratogoa String
Band begins the conference on Friday at 8:30 p.m.
On Saturday at 9 a.m., there will be a discussion with state
agency leaders Dan Fitts, executive director of the Adirondack Park
Agency (APA); John Collins, former chair of the APA; Stu Buchanan,
director of region five of the New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC); and William Kissel, former legal counsel for
the APA.
At 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, a panel representing environmental
groups will convene, including Tim Burke, of the Adirondack Council;
Peter Bauer, of the Residents' Committee to Protect the Adirondacks;
Neil Woodworth, of the Adirondack Mountain Club; and Dave Gibson, of
the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks.
Local towns and governments will be the focus of a discussion
beginning at 1:30 p.m., with Joe Rota, of the Adirondack Local
Government Review Board; Jean Olsen, of the Adirondack Association of
Towns and Villages; and George Canon, Newcomb town supervisor.
A field trip to the Adirondack Fish Hatchery, beginning at
2:45 p.m. and led by DEC personnel, will conclude the conference.
All are welcome to attend any portion of the conference, or
the entire conference, free of charge; the field trip is limited to
25 participants and sign-up will take place at the conference. A buffet
lunch will be available for purchase.
