ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY RECEIVES $5 MILLION GIFT FOR SCIENCE FACILITIES

CANTON – An anonymous donor has given St. Lawrence University $5 million for
new science facilities on campus.
A comprehensive science facilities planning process has been on-going
at the University for the past three years. The plan calls for a four-phase,
multi-year project that includes new construction and extensive renovation.
The $5 million gift will be dedicated toward Phase I of the project:
two new interconnected buildings constructed parallel to one another for
biology and chemistry, with animal behavior laboratory space for those
departments, plus psychology, a greenhouse and extensive space for student
and faculty research.
"This spectacular gift – the second-largest in the University's
history – maintains our momentum as we seek to accomplish our most ambitious
facilities project ever, and it lifts our spirits wonderfully as we go about
our critically important work on behalf of some of the nation's best students.
It's a powerful shot in the arm!," said University President Daniel F. Sullivan.
Phase I will cost $38 million for design and construction, and the
University will seek to raise an additional $8.5 million in endowment funds to
offset future maintenance and depreciation, for total costs of Phase I equaling
$46.5 million. This anonymous gift brings the University's identified resources
for the project to $31.5 million. Construction will begin when all resources for
Phase I have been pledged or received.
St. Lawrence University has engaged The Stubbins Associates (TSA), of
Boston, to serve as lead architects of this project. Working with TSA are two
specialty firms: Croxton Collaborative Architects PC of New York City, known as
one of the foremost innovators in sustainable design, and Research Facilities
Design (RFD), of San Diego, a firm that has been involved in the design of over
500 research and teaching laboratories throughout the country.
St. Lawrence University has a 10-year Master Plan that reflects support
for excellence across the curriculum, a commitment to the quality and increased
size of the faculty, a focus on well-balanced, learning-centered campus life and
an historic investment in renovated and new facilities, all aimed to assure the
University its place among the best institutions in the nation.
