SLU'S BURT SYMPOSIUM TO SPONSOR NEW INITIATIVE
CANTON – St. Lawrence University's Burt Symposium is sponsoring an initiative
aimed at strengthening local communities, called "50 Simple Things to do to
Build Our Community."
The working group for the project is asking interested individuals to
suggest one or two simple things to do to create greater community self-reliance.
The focus should be on using local community assets and keeping money flowing
within the county, rather than spending it a places where it will "leak out" of
the county. Examples of "simple things to do" could include:
- shopping first at locally owned stores
- buying and eating locally grown produce
- formally or informally "adopting" a section of a highway or road to keep clean
After receiving ideas from individuals, the working group will publish
the 50 best ideas in a variety of formats, such as calendars, posters, checklists
or booklets, for use by community members.
St. Lawrence University's annual Ellen C. Burt Symposium brings together people
from throughout the county in the areas of public service, business, agriculture,
tourism, arts and education to focus on local ways to enhance St. Lawrence County's
economic, educational, environmental and cultural vitality. During its sessions
in 2003 and 2004, 10 research/action teams were formed to promote local initiatives
in business enterprise; education; energy; finance, insurance and real estate
(FIRE); food and agriculture; health; housing; retail; tourism; and transportation.
Suggestions for "simple things" to build the county's community may be
e-mailed by July 15 to Douglas Welch, at nlb@northnet.org, or mailed to 50 Simple
Things, c/o Susan Kramer, Atwood Hall, St. Lawrence University, 23 Romoda Drive,
Canton, NY 13617.
